Francois Verdeaux, Head of Sales at Omnicell International, discusses how transforming the pharmacy care delivery model is the future of pharmacy which will empower caregivers.

Global spending on medications continues to grow and, according to a report released by the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science, is projected to reach approximately $1.6 trillion by 2025 (excluding spending on COVID-19 vaccines). Alongside staffing costs, medication spend is one of the greatest costs within healthcare. Medication touches every patient in every single healthcare setting. It is an area of spend where we should be truly able to demonstrate a return on investment.

Not only are medications expensive, they can also cause real harm:

  • Medication errors cause at least one death every day and injure approximately 1.3 million people annually in the U.S. alone. (World Health Organisation)
  • In the EU, nearly 200,000 deaths occur each year due to missed doses of medication. (Medi-Voice Project  http://cordis.europa.eu)
  • Globally, the cost associated with medication errors has been estimated at $42 billion annually or almost 1% of total global health expenditure. (World Health Organisation)
  • It is estimated that adherence to chronic medications is just 50%. (Patient adherence and medical treatment outcomes: a meta-analysis.  Med Care.)

It is worrying then that we have this huge element of healthcare that should be massively impactful, but which has a host of problems. At Omnicell we are committed to transforming the pharmacy care delivery model through solutions that not only improve safety, cost, and efficiency, but also enable and empower pharmacists, nurses and other care givers to practice at the top of their license.

By transforming pharmacy workflows and practices with digitization and data we can remove administrative, logistical tasks for clinicians, so they are free to focus on direct patient care, often the reason they entered their profession in the first place. We are partnering with healthcare systems and care givers on the journey to achieve zero-error medication management.

Over the last five years Omnicell has made significant investments in our portfolio to deliver the automation, software, and technology enabled services to help our partners meet their clinical and operational goals, not only today but well into the future. We are the only provider that has a comprehensive and innovative pharmacy and medication management portfolio  which can be delivered as a service to support our healthcare partners in their journey to improve digitization of their pharmacy and achieve the vision of a full autonomous pharmacy:
